Aquaphobia, or Fear of the Water - What is Aqua-phobia and How can it be Treated?

Monday August 21, 2006
Why are Some People Afraid of Swimming? A fear of water. A non resourceful state, negative feeling, an unwanted reaction, a pattern of behaviour experienced by an individual, which prevents the swimmer from learning a water skill or freely entering a mass-volume water environment such as a swimming pool, sea, lake, ocean, or river. What is aqua-phobia and how can it be treated? (Shev Gul)

I am 62. Never learned to swim because I never wanted to be near the beach, a river or a swimming pool. It’s the most stressing and fearful thing in the world. I have been invited to a sunset sail and I declined. To me it would be the closest thing to hell. Just the other day I was with a group of friends and I was the only one that did not go in the water. All I had in my mind was drowning. All this junk about everyone being able to float is total nonsense. I tried it in a swimming pool with an instructor and I went straight to the bottom. My one and only leeson.
