Athletes, Overtraining, and Overuse (Chronic) Injuries

Friday November 10, 2006
Overuse syndromes are common sports injuries that result from repetitive use, stress and trauma to the soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, bones and joints) without allowing enough rest and recovery. Overuse injuries are most common in new exercisers or in athletes who mistakenly think 'more exercise is better' and wind up overtraining. The best treatment for overuse injuries and overtraining is reducing the amount of time or intensity of exercise, and letting the body naturally heal. How much exercise you require depends upon a variety of factors, but some basic guidelines can help you find the best level for you. (Elizabeth Quinn/Abput Sports Medicine)
