USA Women's Olympic Water Polo Team Wins Group A Through Tiebreaker

Friday August 15, 2008
The U.S. Olympic Team for Women’s Water Polo has won Group A by virtue of Italy’s 10-9 defeat of China. Both the United States and Italy ended in a tie with two wins and a tie. The tie breaker went then to competition against the third best team in which Italy and USA both beat China by a goal. It then went to most goals scored against that team in which the United States scored 12 to Italy’s 10. The United States now advances with a bye to the semi-finals and will play on August 19 against the winner of Australia/China. Group B was won by Hungary. Hungary advances with a bye and will take on the winner of Italy/Netherlands. The quarterfinals take place on August 17. Advancement to a medal game for the United States continues their streak of playing for a medal in every major tournament since the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
