Swimming: Getting Better with Age?
Friday August 29, 2008
Dara Torres, the 41-year-old Olympic swimmer with the impossibly chiseled abs who collected three silver medals in Beijing, has proved at the elite level that getting older doesn’t mean getting slower in the water. But put her aside for now. Even outside the elite ranks, the 40-something (and older) swimmer of today is faster than the 40-something of yesteryear. (Liz Robbins/New York Times)

Good artical but lets not forget, the majority of over 40’s swimmers are not ‘in the swim’ for the sake of competition. I’m 50 odd and quite frankly am just pleased to be able to get out of bed in the morning, be able to swim for 40-60 minutes and leave the water feeling better than when I arrived! regarding the lady in her 90’s who intends to swim whilst she can drive herself to the pool three days a week; I hope when her driving days are over, someone will step up and drive her there and back.

I followed Dara’s accomplishment and that she didn’t win the gold was a little sad.
I am a master swimmer and hope to compete until the day I die. I am now 71 and Dara is a real inspiration for many millions of people.
