How many calories do you burn when swimming? Swimming burns about 500 calories an hour at a moderate effort (1-minute for 50 yards). What if you swim slower or faster, swim different strokes, or are just going to tread water? You can find the answers on About.com's Calorie Count pages.

Another frequent question - is swimming a good exercise choice if your primary goal is to lose body weight? The Answer is maybe.

(1) SCAQ Tony says:

50 yards at a 1:20 pace per 50, if swam consecutively on after the other or summarily lap swimming is 2,250.

I am surprised that it is that much. I hold a 1:20 pace per hundred and my workouts are generally 3,000 to 3,500 per hour. (I don’t lap swim my workouts are coached.

I wonder how the caloric burn cycle scales in terms of both effort and distance?
