Swimmers Catch and Release for Faster Swimming

When you "catch" or grab the water makes you a faster, stronger swimmer. But what about letting go of the water - the release? Where do you stop catching during swimming? What is the right place to let go of the water and start the recovery? I have a few ideas on when a swimmer should release the water.
