Do an Open Swim Turn

By Mat Luebbers, About.com

When swimming laps, change directions easily and get a breath with the open turn.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 10 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Swim towards the wall, belly down.
  2. Grab the wall with one hand.
  3. Look at your hand on the wall.
  4. Pull your knees in and up towards your chin.
  5. Pull your feet up towards your butt.
  6. Do a 1/2 twist so your belly is pointing to the side.
  7. Point the other hand (not holding the wall) the direction you want to go (under the water).
  8. Swivel your body, moving your hips and feet toward the wall being held.
  9. Take a breath.
  10. Let go of the wall with your hand and bring your feet to the wall.
  11. Let your upper body sink - hold your breath!
  12. Swing the hand that was holding the wall over your head to meet the other hand underwater.
  13. Put your hands together, straighten your arms, and point them both where you want to go (underwater).
  14. Push off the wall.
  15. Surface and begin swimming.

Tips:

  1. Take your time.
  2. Practice each step, piece by piece.
  3. Take your time!
