Want to do a race in a lake or ocean - but can't find one? Maybe you haven't looked in the right places.
Open water races are a part of many regular swimming groups. Masters teams in particular are often a great resource for lake or ocean races.
USA Swimming also has an Open Water division that can help you find a race in your area. They even offer training for Open Water officials!
Canada has several open water events available in many different areas. And more globally, FINA is a good source to locate various races around the world. Another great source is the "Ocean Swims" site, devoted to open water races.
How about mixing swimming and running? That's an Aquathon or Aquathlon - and there is a world championship event, being held in Cancun, Mexico in November, 2002. It will be a 2.5-km run + 1-km swim + 2.5-km run. To compete for a spot on the US team, you must submit times for a 5-km run and an 800-meter swim.
I hope you can find a race in your area. Need more help? Let me know. Enjoy the waves.
