12/23/2000 - The Year's Best Swimmers
The year 2000 brought a few new stars in 50 meter pools. It also shined up some the old ones and saw a few begin to lose their flash. The year's biggest event, the Sydney Olympics, was a showplace for the world's best, but was not the only meet of 2000 where the swimmers showed who was best.

12/10/2000 - Getting Flexible Outside of the Pool
Most workout and fitness routines, including ones that I like to use, include regular stretching to increase or maintain flexibility. Why Stretch? What does flexibility do for a swimmer?

11/25/2000 - Getting Stronger Outside of the Pool 
Sport specific work is the best way to get better at that sport; if you want to be a better swimmer, then swim! But how can you make additional gains when you have maximized your swim time? One way is to add dryland work - flexibility exercises, plyometric work, swimming while wearing weights, and resistance training are some of the options. One example of resistance training is weight work aimed at adding strength and speed to your stroke. 

11/10/2000 - Flip Turns for Everyone!
Swim to the wall. Turn around. Swim to the other wall. Turn around again. There are lots of ways to do that turn, but competitive swimmers all use flip turns - they are faster and, once learned, easier than open turns. They also give swimmers a little more confidence in themselves, and in their ability to hold their breath. 

10/28/2000 - How did they swim that fast?
How did de Bruijn, van den Hoogenband, Klim, Torres, and the rest swim so fast in the last year and at the 2000 Olympics? While some may say it could be due to performance enhancing substances, I prefer to think a lot of it is from improved technique.

At 7:00 am on Saturday, October 14, a group of 1,585 people, between the ages of 18 and 80, will start swimming. Their goal? Cover 140.6 miles by swimming, bicycling, and running in and around the island paradise of Hawaii.
