2008 Team USA Paralympic Swimming Results - 8 Sep PM Finals Session
The US team continued its momentum at the National Aquatics Center tonight with three gold medals, two silver and one bronze. Americans dominated the women's 100m freestyle (S7), with Erin Popovich (Fort Collins, Colo./Silverbow, Mont.) taking gold and teammate Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.) joining her on the podium with silver. Popovich set a Paralympic record of 1:11.82, breaking the Paralympic record she set during the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games.

Lantz Lamback (Colorado Springs, Colo./Augusta, Ga.) shaved over three seconds off of his qualifying time (1:17.26) to set a new world record (1:14.06) in the men’s 100m backstroke (S7). “I just went after it and didn’t hold back,” said Lamback following his preliminary round race.

On day four of competition, 22 year-old Lantz Lamback (Colorado Springs, Colo./Augusta, Ga.) and 18 year-old Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.) both set world records, taking gold in their respective events. Lamback dropped more than five seconds from his qualifying time (1:17.26), setting a world record (1:12.09) in the men's 100m backstroke (S7). The defending world champion, Perkins finished first in the men's 50m butterfly (S5) with a time of 35.95.

On day five of competition, the U.S. women once again dominated the podium with multiple medalists in single events. The duo of Erin Popovich (Fort Collins, Colo./ Silverbow, Mont.)/ Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.) took the podium for gold/silver in the women's 400m freestyle (S7), followed by teammates Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.)/Amanda Everlove (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who won gold/silver in the women's 200m IM (SM8).

In the preliminary rounds of day six of competition, Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) smashed another world record, this time in the women's 400m freestyle (S8.) Her time of 4:47.45 beat the former world record (4:53.14), which she set in 2006, by more than five seconds. Her nearest competitor, Heather Frederiksen (GBR) was ranked in the number two spot, more than 10 seconds behind Long.

On day eight of swimming competition at the National Aquatics Center, U.S. Women's Swimming Team co-captain Erin Popovich (Fort Collins, Colo./Silverbow, Mont.) set a Paralympic Record (34.22 ) in the women's 50m freestyle (S7) prelims. Popovich, who has won four gold medals and one silver so far at the meet, is looking to "go out with a bang" on her last race of the Beijing Paralympic Games.

"I saw myself on the screen and couldn't believe it. It was unbelievable," said Jordan.

After securing gold in yesterday's 100m butterfly (S8), Long will compete for her second medal of the Beijing Paralympic Games in tonight's competition.

Erin Popovich shattered her own world record in the women's 200m individual medley. Rudy Garcia-Tolson held on to his 200m IM title with a world record. Miranda Uhl made her Paralympic debut in the 200m IM with a gold medal and a world record. Jessica Long nabbed gold in the women's 100m butterfly.

The US Paralympic swimming team came out strong on day one of competition, breaking two world records and two Paralympic records in the morning preliminary rounds at the National Aquatics Center. In the men's 200m individual medley (IM) (SM7), Rudy Garcia-Tolson beat his former world record by nearly three seconds with a time of 2:37.80. First-time Paralympian Amanda Everlove also broke a world record, finishing the women's 100m butterfly (S8) in 1:11.64.

On the final day of swimming competition at the Water Cube, the U.S. Paralympic Swimming Team won four additional medals, bringing the total count to 44, including 17 gold medals, and finishing – for the first time – at the top of the medal standings.
US Paralympic Swimming Team Tops Medal Standings at 2008 Paralympic Games
For the first time, the US Paralympic Swimming Team finished first in the medal standings, winning 17 gold medals at the Beijing Paralympic Games. With 44 total medals, nine more than they took home from Athens (2004), the team has proven their ability on this elite international stage. The US swimmers set a total of 16 world records, 23 Paralympic records, 48 Pan American records and 99 American records.
