Also holding the top rank going into Wednesday night finals is first-time Paralympian Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.), who set a Paralympic record (37.14) in the men's 50m butterfly (S5.)
Kelley Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) also finished with the fastest time (1:00.27) in the women's 100m freestyle (S13) heats. "I felt good and fast. I felt smooth," said Becherer. "My strategy tonight is to win - just race and keep it up." Becherer will be competing tonight for her second medal of the Beijing Paralympic Games. She won bronze in the women's 400m freestyle (S13.)
Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) finished second in the women's 100m backstroke (S8) heats with a time of 1:20.44. Looking for her fourth medal of the competition, Long will be challenging Heather Frederiksen (GBR), who set a world record (1:17.62) this morning.
