On day eight of swimming competition at the National Aquatics Center, U.S. Women's Swimming Team co-captain Erin Popovich (Fort Collins, Colo./Silverbow, Mont.) set a Paralympic Record (34.22 ) in the women's 50m freestyle (S7) prelims. Popovich, who has won four gold medals and one silver so far at the meet, is looking to "go out with a bang" on her last race of the Beijing Paralympic Games.

"I want it really bad," said Popovich. "I want to show that I can hold it in the prelims and then do just as great tonight. The 50 [meter] is tricky. In the 400 [meter races], you can play with it and see where to make your move. In this one, you have to go all out."

U.S. teammate Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.) will also be vying for a medal in the 50m freestyle (S7.) Going into finals, she is seeded fourth with a time of 35.57.

"That was a best time for me and I feel really strong," said Jordan. "Tonight's going to be a great race. I feel really prepared. The other races [in Beijing] have given me a lot of experience and I'm ready to go out and get another medal."

In addition to Jordan, five more U.S. swimmers are seeded third or fourth heading into Sunday finals: Miranda Uhl (Alachua, Fla.), Kelley Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.), Lantz Lamback (Colorado Springs, Colo./Augusta, Ga.), Justin Zook (Plymouth, Minn.) and Susan Beth Scott (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cape Girardeau, Mo.)

In total, 13 U.S. athletes will be competing in tonight's finals:

  • 17:10 Men's 50m Freestyle (S12) - Tucker Dupree (Raleigh, N.C.) - 25.41 (5)
