Back to Olympic Swimming

Following the conclusion of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Swimming in Omaha, Neb., USA Swimming today named the complete roster for the 2008 U.S. Olympic swim team. In addition to the 43 athletes named to the team, the swim team's coaching staff was finalized. All swimmers are set to compete in the individual events in which they qualified, with the exception of Dara Torres who will not swim the women's 100m freestyle. She will be replaced in the event by third-place qualifier at the Trials, Lacey Nymeyer (Tucson, Ariz.).

UPDATE on 8 July 2008 - Kara Lynn Joyce Added to U.S. Olympic Team Roster

Kara Lynn Joyce has been added to the roster of the U.S. Olympic Swim Team, it was announced today. Joyce, who finished seventh in the 100m freestyle at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, will be added as a 4x100m freestyle relay alternate. The addition comes after the voluntary withdrawal from the individual 100m freestyle event by top qualifier Dara Torres (Los Angeles, Calif.). The top six finishers in both the men's and women's 100m and 200m freestyle qualified for the Olympic Team.

All members of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team are eligible to compete on relays, which are selected by the coaching staff while at the Olympic Games.

Additionally, fifth-place qualifier in the 100m freestyle, Emily Silver (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), underwent outpatient hand surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. The surgery was performed by Dr. Jeff Yao. Silver will report to training camp this afternoon and is expected to return to swimming in one week. She is expected to participate at the 2008 Olympic Games.

The Olympic pool competition will take place Aug. 9 through Aug. 17 at the Beijing National Aquatic Center. The women's and men's 10K Olympic marathon swim will take place on Aug. 20 and 21 at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing, China.

All members of the U.S. Olympic swim team are subject to final approval by the United States Olympic Committee.
