USA Swimmer Mark Warkentin Finishes 8th in First-Ever Men’s Olympic 10k Marathon
Mark Warkentin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) placed eighth Thursday in the Olympic debut of the men’s 10k marathon swim at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park. The Netherlands’ Maarten van der Weijden won gold in 1:51:51.6, while David Davies (GBR) earned the silver and Thomas Lurz (GER) finished third for the bronze at 1:51:53.1 and 1:51:53.6, respectively.

American swimmers were dominant in the pool Tuesday morning, winning three gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the 2008 Olympic Games. In addition to their medal haul, they also set two world, an American and an Olympic record in the third round of finals at the National Aquatics Center.

Rebecca Soni broke the American record Wednesday night in the prelims of the 200m breast at the 2008 Olympic Games. Soni’s time of 2:22.17 eclipsed the former Olympic record of 2:23.37, set by Amanda Beard in 2004, by more than a second. It is .27 seconds faster than the former American record set by Beard at the 2004 Olympic Trials.
Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps is the Greatest Olympic Swimmer of All Time
With wins in the 200m butterfly and 800m free relay, Michael Phelps won his 10th and 11th career Olympic gold medals, more than any other athlete in history. His time of 1:52.03 in the 100m fly edged his former world record in that event by six-hundredths of a second. He then teamed up with Ryan Lochte, Ricky Berens and Peter Vanderkaay to smash the world record in the 800m free with a time of 6:58.56.

American swimmers won three gold medals and set three world records Friday at the 2008 Olympic Games. Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) won his sixth gold and set his sixth world record of the week in the men's 200m IM, turning in a time of 1:54.23. Other American swimmers winning gold and setting world records Friday were Rebecca Soni (Plainsboro, N.J.) in the women's 200m breaststroke (2:20.22) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) in the men's 200m backstroke (1:53.94).

Their time of 7:04.66 was more than three seconds faster than the rest of the qualifying field.

Setting Olympic records were Amaury Leveaux of France in the men’s 50m free (21.46); Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain in the women’s 800m free (8:18.06); Milorad Cavic of Serbia in the men’s 100m fly (50.76) and Kirsty Coventry in the women’s 200m back (2:06.76).

14 August 2008 Morning Session: Allison Schmitt, Natalie Coughlin, Caroline Burckle and Katie Hoff set an American record and won a bronze medal in the women’s 800m freestyle relay Thursday with a time of 7:46.33. Their medal was one of two won by the United States, with Jason Lezak tying Brazil’s Cesar Cielo for the bronze in the men’s 100m free in 47.67. Team USA’s medal count in the pool now stands at 20 – seven gold, five silver and eight bronze.
16 August Morning Session - 2008 Olympic Swimming Results
Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal Saturday at the National Aquatics Center, winning the men’s 100m butterfly in an Olympic record time of 50.58. Phelps’ effort was one of two medals for the United States on the seventh day of competition, with Margaret Hoelzer taking silver in the women’s 200m backstroke in 2:06.23. That brings Team USA’s total medal count to 28 – 11 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze.

USA Swimmer Chloe Sutton 22nd in Olympic Marathon 10km Swim
Chloe Sutton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished 22nd in the debut of the women’s Olympic 10k marathon swim Wednesday at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing. Russian swimmer Larisa Ilchenko won the first-ever Olympic open water gold,while Great Britian's Keri-Anne Payne and Cassandra Patten finished second and third for the silver and bronze, respectively.
