USA Swimming Report: Phelps, Lochte, Soni Win Gold and Break World Records on Sixth Day of Olympic Swimmings

American swimmers won three gold medals and set three world records Friday at the 2008 Olympic Games. Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) won his sixth gold and set his sixth world record of the week in the men's 200m IM, turning in a time of 1:54.23. Other American swimmers winning gold and setting world records Friday were Rebecca Soni (Plainsboro, N.J.) in the women's 200m breaststroke (2:20.22) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) in the men's 200m backstroke (1:53.94). Lochte also took bronze in the 200m IM (1:56.53), swimming a tough double against Phelps and Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.), who, going into those races, held the world records in their respective events.

Also winning medals for Team USA were Peirsol, who took silver in the 200m back in 1:54.33 and Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.), who took bronze in the women's 100m freestyle, tying her American record in 53.39. The Americans' effort Friday brought their total medal tally to 26 - 10 gold, six silver and 10 bronze.

In the final of the women's 200m breast, Soni and Australia's Leisel Jones were neck-and-neck and more than a second ahead of world-record pace at the 100-meter mark, with Jones holding a slight edge at the second turn. Soni took the lead at 150 meters and turned for home, increasing her distance on the pack as she made her way down the pool. Jones touched for the silver in 2:22.05, while Sara Nordenstam of Norway won bronze in 2:23.02. Friday's win was Soni's second medal of the Games after taking silver in the 100m breast.

Lochte and Peirsol shared the world record coming into the finals of the men's 200m back at 1:54.32. Both swimmers trailed Russia's Arkady Vyatchanin at the 150-meter mark before reeling him in on the final lap and pulling ahead in the last 10 to 15 meters. Vyatchanin finished third in 1:54.93.

About a half hour later, Lochte was back in the pool facing Phelps in the 200m IM. Phelps led that race from start to finish, with Lochte and Hungarian Laszlo Cseh nipping at his heels through 150 meters. Phelps was ahead by 67-hundredths going into the final length, and as he turned, increased his lead on the field to a body length. Cseh finished second in 1:56.52, while Lochte finished with the bronze. The trio of Phelps, Cseh and Lochte also finished in the same order in the 400m IM during the first finals session Sunday.

In the women's 100m free, world record-holder Libby Trickett of Australia broke out to a lead in the first length, only to have Germany's Britta Steffen catch up and pass her in the last 35 meters. Steffen took the gold in an Olympic record time of 53.12, with Trickett right behind in 53.16.

Brazil's Cesar Cielo set the Olympic record in the semifinals of the men's 50m free in 21.34. Ben Wildman-Tobriner (San Francisco, Calif.) qualified seventh for finals in 21.76, while Garrett Weber-Gale (Milwaukee, Wis.) missed finals with a 13th-place finish of 22.08.

After setting the Olympic record in Thursday's prelims, Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry tied that record in the semifinals of the women's 200m back, turning in a time of 2:07.76. Elizabeth Beisel (Saunderstown, R.I.) qualified second for finals in 2:07.90, while world record-holder and reigning world champion Margaret Hoelzer (Huntsville, Ala.) qualified fifth in 2:08.25.

Serbia's Milorad Cavic set the Olympic record in the semifinals of the men's 100m butterfly and will be the top seed for tomorrow's finals in 50.92. He is seeded five-hundredths ahead of Phelps (50.97), who had just five minutes to ready himself for this race after the 200m IM medal ceremonies. Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) tied for the third seed with Andrew Lauterstein of Australia in 51.27.
