USA Swimming Report: Phelps Breaks Olympic Record in 200m Fly Prelims
Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) set an Olympic record in the prelims of the 200m butterfly Monday, turning in a time of 1:53.70. Phelps is seeded first headed into Tuesday morning's 200m fly semifinal. In addition to Phelps, every American swimming in prelims Monday night advanced to Tuesday morning's semifinals.Gil Stovall (Memphis, Tenn.) also advanced in the men's 200m fly semifinal, qualifying eighth in 1:55.42. Phelps and Stovall are the top two performers in the 200m fly in history.
In the women's 200m free, Italy's Federica Pellegrini set the world record in Monday's semifinal, turning in a time of 1:55.45. American record-holder Katie Hoff (Towson, Md.) and Allison Schmitt (Canton, Mich.) are seeded fourth and seventh, respectively, with times of 1:57.20 and 1:57.38.
In Hoff's second event of the night, the 200m IM, she qualified as the second seed for Tuesday's semifinal with a time of 2:11.58. Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) advanced as the third seed in the event, turning in a time of 2:11.53. The top seed is Alicia Coutts of Australia in 2:11.55.
Olympic swimming competition continues Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. local time with finals in the men's 200m free and 100m back, and the women's 100m back and 100m breast. Semifinals will be contested in the women's 200m free and 200m IM, and the men's 200m fly.
