USA Swimming Report: USA Swimmers Take Home Three Gold, Two Silver, and Two Bronze on Third Day of 2008 Olympic Swimming
American swimmers were dominant in the pool Tuesday morning, winning three gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the 2008 Olympic Games. In addition to their medal haul, they also set two world, an American and an Olympic record in the third round of finals at the National Aquatics Center.Michael Phelps (Batimore, Md.) accounted for one gold, setting a world record in the men's 200m free in 1:42.96. Phelps took the lead from the start and increased his margin on the world record pace at each turn. The silver went to Korea's Taehwan Park in 1:44.85, while Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich.) took the bronze in 1:45.14.
The win was Phelps' ninth career Olympic gold, which ties him for the most ever with Mark Spitz and track legend Carl Lewis.
"That's a pretty amazing accomplishment," Phelps said. "It's definitely an honor. I've been able to spend some time with Carl Lewis and exchanged a few words with Spitz here and there, so it's definitely pretty amazing."
In the final of the men's 100m back, Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) set the second world record, shattering his former mark in by 35-hundredths of a second, turning in a time of 52.54. Peirsol was second at the wall but separated himself from the pack in the final 15 meters. He finished more than a half second ahead of Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.), who earned silver in 53.11. Arkady Vyatchanin of Russia and Hayden Stoeckel of Australia tied for bronze in 53.18.
Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) defended her Olympic title in the 100m back in an American-record time of 58.96. Coughlin propelled herself into the lead with a great start and and maintained her lead going into the final length. Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry, who took the world record from Coughlin in Monday's semifinal with a time of 58.77, was second in 59.19. Margaret Hoelzer (Huntsville, Ala.) earned the bronze with a time of 59.34.
Coughlin became the first woman in history to repeat as Olympic champion in the 100m back.
"That added a lot of pressure and made me nervous," Coughlin said. "I didn't feel that great going into this meet. I felt I had very, very strong training under my belt, but for whatever reason the last few days before the meet, I wasn't feeling as strong as I was hoping to.
In the women's 100m breast, Australia's Leisel Jones set an Olympic-record with a time of 1:05.17. Rebecca Soni (Plainsboro, N.J.) moved into the silver medal position with about 15 meters to go.
