The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Olympic Games Synchronized Swimming Qualification Tournament starts April 16. Headed by many-time Olympic and world championships runners-up Japan, a number of strong teams will vie for Olympic spots during the five-day tournament. The Olympic synchronized swimming competition consists of two events, team and duet, with the participation of 8 teams in the team event and 24 pairs of swimmers in the duet event.

In the duet, the qualification tournament allowed 15 duets to get their Olympic ‘ticket’, with 9 previously determined, for a total of 24 duets at the Games.

Mengual and Fuentes for their explosive routine, giving them a combined score of 97.667 to leave early leaders Jiang Tingting and Jiang Wenwen (CHN) with the silver medal (96.083) and Japan's Saho Harada and Emiko Suzuki with the bronze (96.001).

Synchronized Swimming, a women's only sport at the Olympic level, was an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games from 1948 to 1968, then became a full-fledged Summer Olympic sport in 1984. At the 1984, 1988, and 1992 games there were solo and duet events. In 1996, only a team event was held. Since 2000, a team event and a duet event has been held.
