Swimmers from around the globe will compete for the swimmiing medals in a variety of events at the 2009 FINA Swimming World Championships in Rome 17 July through 2 August 2009. Events at the FINA Swimming World Championships include Water Polo, Synchronized Swimming, Open Water Swimming, Pool Swimming, and Diving. The city of Dubai (UAE) will be the organizer of the 15th Swimming World Championships, to be held in 2013.

Pool Swimming at the 2009 World Swimming Championships: 26 July - 2 August

Water Polo World Championships: 19 July - 1 August

Open Water Swimming at the 2009 Swimming World Championships: 21-25 July

Synchronized Swimming World Championships: 18-25 July

Diving World Championships: 17 July - 25 July

According to the last figures received, 2556 athletes from 185 countries will be present at the Foro Italico venue (facilities for Swimming, Diving, Water Polo and Synchronized Swimming) and Ostia Beach (Open Water Swimming). The city of Dubai (UAE) will be the organizer of the 15th Swimming World Championships, to be held in 2013. By disciplines, the numbers are the following:
  • SWIMMING - 1470 athletes from 164 countries
  • DIVING - 200 athletes from 43 countries
  • WATER POLO - 416 athletes from 21 countries
  • SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING - 269 athletes from 41 countries
  • OPEN WATER SWIMMING - 152 athletes from 39 countries
The previous record of participation was established in the previous edition of these championships, in 2007 in Melbourne (AUS). In Australia, 2158 athletes from 167 nations took part in the competition. (USA Aquatics)
