Canada’s Alexandre Despatie topped the scoreboard with 486.65 points, followed by two Chinese divers – Qin Kai at 474.50 and He Chong at 470.75.
Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla.), who finished fourth in the 1-meter finals for the U.S. on Wednesday, got into some early trouble and finished 34th. His knees buckled on his first dive, scoring just 9.30 points. He came back strong and was solid throughout the duration of the competition. He scored 84 points on his last dive, tying for the second-best score of the round and moving him up from 40th to 34th (out of 46) in the final standings. He finished with 341.70 points.
Dumais and the 17 other semifinalists will compete at noon Melbourne time (9 p.m. Eastern time) on Friday.
First, though, Thursday’s competition continues with women’s 1-meter preliminaries at 6:30 p.m. Allison Brennan (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill.) will compete for the U.S.
