Who's Going to Beijing for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim?
Sports fans love talking about how their favorite teams and players will perform. But, these educated and emotional guesses are easy compared to predicting who will qualify for the Olympics in the world's most pressure-packed race in open water swimming history: the 2008 World Open Water Swimming Championships. The top 15 (or 16) finishers at the 2008 World Championships will qualify for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in Seville to be held May 3rd (women) and May 4th (men)
Mark Warkentin and Chloe Sutton Are First Two Swimmers Named to 08 Olympic Team
Top U.S. open water swimmers Mark Warkentin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Chloe Sutton (Roseville, Calif.) are the first two swimmers to be named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic swim team. Warkentin and Sutton will compete in the 10K marathon swimming event in Beijing, which marks the event's first-ever appearance in Olympic competition.

The Olympic 10K Marathon Swim will be held in the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park, about 35km outside of Beijing. It is interesting to compare this open water swimming venue with the famous Water Cube of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the world's largest pool in Chile.
US Swimmer Chloe Sutton Qualifies for 10k Open Water Swimming Olympic Spot
Chloe Sutton won the 10K Olympic Open Water Test Event today (31 May 2008) in Beijing, qualifying for the Olympic 10K race later this summer and ensuring her spot on the U.S. Olympic Team roster. Her final time was 2:00:48.5, ahead of Italian Martina Grimaldi and her compatriot Alice Franco, who were 2:01:19.7 and 2:01:36.5 respectively.
Sutton, Groome to Represent USA at Open Water Olympic Qualifying Event
The U.S. will send two female swimmers to Beijing, China to compete in the final Olympic qualifier for the 10K open water swim, May 31-June 1. Chloe Sutton and Kirsten Groome will represent the USA at the event. While the U.S. will send both Sutton and Groome to the Beijing Test Event, only one U.S. swimmer can qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games at the competition.
