American swimmers will begin competition Saturday at the 2010 FINA Open Water World Swimming Championships in Roberval (Québec, Canada). The competition runs through Thursday, July 22 and will feature races for men and women in the 5K, 10K and 25K distances.

The first race in Roberval will be the women’s 10K, taking place at Lac St-Jean. National Teamers Eva Fabian (Keene, N.H.) and Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.) will compete in the event.

The men’s 10K race will take place Sunday in Roberval and will feature Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) and Chip Peterson (Pine Knoll Shores, N.C). Crippen was the bronze medalist in the 10K at last year’s FINA World Championships, and Peterson is the only American man to ever win gold in the 10K at World Championships, which he did in 2005.

The 10K event is the only open water discipline to be featured in the Olympic Games. Its first Olympic appearance came in 2008, and the event will again be featured at the London Games in 2012.

The men’s and women’s 5K event in Roberval will take place on Tuesday and will feature Crippen and Peterson again on the men’s side and Fabian and Jennings on the women’s side.

The final event of the Open Water World Championships will be the men’s and women’s 25K on Thursday. National Teamers Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Emily Hanson (Bloomington, Ill.) will represent the U.S. women in the event, while the men’s side will feature National Teamers Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Joe Kinderwater (Lancaster, Pa.).
