Warkentin, who qualified for his first Olympics earlier in the championships, swam the race in 5:04:01.6. Team USA finished fourth with 48 points in the overall team standings.
"I was not expecting those results from this race," Warkentin said. "I was here for the 10K. This is just icing on the cake. I have never heard the National Anthem in my honor, but seeing the flag flying was a pretty good feeling." Three-time National Champion John Kenny (Atlantic City, N.J.) also competed in the race, finishing 15th in a time of 5:20:22.3. The Netherland's Maarten Van Der Weijden won the race in 5:04:01.1 and Russia's Yuriy Koudinov was third in 5:04:02.4. Micha Burden (Anchorage, Alaska) and Erica Rose (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) represented Team USA in the women's 25K. Burden, led the contingent of competitors for the second of five laps, but fell to 13th place at the end of the race in a time of 5:48:15.5. Rose held a steady position in the middle of the pack throughout the event, taking 14th place in a time of 5:49:14.3. Russia's Ksenia Popova and the Netherland's Edith Van Dijk finished in the top 2 spots in times of 5:27:48.2 and 5:27:50.3, respectively, while Popova's teammate Natalya Pankina took third in 5:27:53.9.
