Paralympics

The Paralympic Games is an international competition among each nation’s elite athletes with physical disabilities and is second in size only to the Olympic Games. The Paralympic Games follow the Olympic Games at the same venues and facilities. The Paralympic Games have been contested since 1960 and now feature competition in 19 sports. The Paralympic Games offers competition to athletes who are blind or visually impaired, to athletes with amputated limbs or similar impairments, to athletes with spinal cord injuries and athletes who have motor impairments due to cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, or stroke. In certain sports, athletes with other physical disabilities may also compete.
Jimi Flowers Named 2009 Disability Swimming Coach of the Year…
Former USA Swimming National Team Coordinator and U.S. Paralympics National Team Manager and Coach Jimi Flowers was honored today as the 2009 Disability Swimming Coach of the Year at the Aquatic Sports Convention in Chicago. Flowers is receiving the award following his passing in early July of this year.
Melissa Stockwell Represents Team USA as Flag Bearer for the Closing Ceremonies
American swimmer Melissa Stockwell has been selected by the US delegation as flag bearer for the closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Stockwell, who lost her left leg to a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq, is the first veteran injured in Iraq to compete on the US Paralympic Swimming Team.

The 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games are September 6 through 17. The Paralympics use the same venues as the Olympics, so the backdrops for the events will look familiar to anyone that followed the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Athletes Nominated for 2008 US Paralympics Swimming Team
The U.S. Olympic Committee's Paralympics division announced today the 38 swimming athletes (20 male and 18 female) that have been nominated to represent the U.S. at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. US Paralympics Team Head Coach Julie O’Neill said the team includes incredible athletes and will be competitive in Beijing.
American Records Highlight Day Two US Paralympics Swimming Trials
Competition finished Friday evening at the 2008 U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials with several U.S. Paralympics swimmers earning new American records. Justin Zook was a standout of day two of the competition capturing a couple of American records in the 100m backstroke (S10) with a time of 1:02.06 as well as the 50m freestyle (S10) with a time of 25.34.

Records Are Broken On Final Day Of 2008 US Paralympics Swimming Trials
The U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials concluded Saturday with a total of 10 American records and two world records broken on the final day of competition. Female Swimmer of the Meet Susan Beth Scott was an overall standout of the competition placing first in the world in the Women’s 400 freestyle (S10) with a time of 4:40.10. Male Swimmer of the Meet Lantz Lamback produced another successful day earning a new American record in the Men’s 100m freestyle (S7) with a time of 1:03.58
Stockwell’s Record Highlights Opening Day of 2008 US Paralympics Swimming Trials
Day one of the U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center concluded with several new world and American records being broken. Iraq war veteran Melissa Stockwell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) set a new American record in the Women’s 400m freestyle (S9) with a time of 5:03.08. Stockwell lost her leg to a roadside bomb in Baghdad and said this experience was better than expected.
Swimmer Jessica Long Becomes First Paralympic Athlete to Win AAU Sullivan Award
Swimmer Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) became the first Paralympic athlete to win the AAU James E. Sullivan Award, presented to the USA’s best amateur athlete, Wednesday night at an awards ceremony in New York City. Long, 15, won the award after a spectacular year in 2006, highlighted by her performance at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Durban, South Africa, in December, where she won nine gold medals and set five world records.
Swimmers Nominated for 2007 U.S. Parapan American Swimming Team
The U.S. Olympic Committee's Paralympic division announced today the 15 swimming athletes that have been nominated to represent the U.S. at the 2007 Parapan American Games, Aug. 12-19 in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Three athletes on the roster - Kate Gibbs, Susan Beth Scott, and Michael Prout - were part of the U.S. team that competed at the 2006 International Paralympic Committee Swimming (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Durban, South Africa.

USA Swimmer Uhl Swims Way to Gold, Makes Elite USA Swim Team at 2007 Parapan Am
Miranda Uhl entered the fourth night of competition at the Parapan American Games with two goals in mind – to win a gold medal in the 400m freestyle and swim fast enough to make the US Elite swim team. She did both in fine fashion, finishing in a time of 6:11.15. “I had to swim a 6:14 or faster to make the elite team and I finished with a 6:11,” Uhl said. “It was great and I am really excited to win gold and to make the elite team.”

The United States swim team continued its medal haul on Tuesday night at the Aquatic Center Maria Lenk in Rio de Janeiro. They added another nine to the overall U.S. medal count, which stands at 32, and brings the total swimming medals to 18 for the 2007 Parapan Am Games.

Three elite Paralympic swimmers broke world records at the Summer Can-Am Championships held in Vancouver, British Columbia, July 14-16. Kelley Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) broke the world record in the S13 Women’s 50m backstroke with a time of 34.16. Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, Ga.) set a new world record in the S10 Women’s 200m freestyle with a time of 2:19.51 and Jarrett Perry (Wichita, Kan.) set a new record in the S9 Men’s 200m backstroke with a time of 2:18.55.
