Records Are Broken On Final Day Of 2008 US Paralympics Swimming Trials

The U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials concluded Saturday with a total of 10 American records and two world records broken on the final day of competition. Female Swimmer of the Meet Susan Beth Scott was an overall standout of the competition placing first in the world in the Women’s 400 freestyle (S10) with a time of 4:40.10. Male Swimmer of the Meet Lantz Lamback produced another successful day earning a new American record in the Men’s 100m freestyle (S7) with a time of 1:03.58.

Additional highlights from the final day of the U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials included:

  • Rudy Garcia (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Riverside, Calif.) captured a new world record in the Men’s 200m IM (SM7) with a time of 2:40.59
  • Cody Bureau (Colorado Springs, Colo./ Latrobe, Pennsylvania) swimming to second place in the world in the Men’s 200m IM (SM9) with a time of 2:22.83.
  • Erin Popovich (Silverbow, Mont.) beat her previous world record with a time of 3:00.34 in the Women’s 200m IM (SM7).
  • Anna Eames (Golden Valley, Minn.) maintained her rank as number two in the world with a time of 2:44.45 in the Women’s 200m IM (SM10).
U.S. Paralympics Swimming Resident Head Coach Jimi Flowers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) said the competition was intense and there is a lot to look forward to among these athletes. “The competition was extremely intense and very competitive. Every swim counts toward a rank and that maintains intensity and brings great competition,” said Flowers. “I am nervous and excited to learn the team nominations tomorrow, but I’m confident we have a lot of talent to be solid in Beijing.”

Based on performances posted at the U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials, U.S. Paralympics is expected to nominate 38 athletes (20 male and 18 female) to the team Sunday, April 6 at 9:15 a.m at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
