Eric Namesnik Grand Prix: Day 3 Evening Prelims Report

Prelims for 10 events were contested tonight, in preparation for tomorrow’s morning finals session. The Eric Namesnik Memorial Grand Prix will draw to close tomorrow, after finals in the 200m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly and 800m free relay. In addition, the women’s 800m freestyle, men’s 1500m freestyle will be contested.

In the 200m backstroke, Aleksandra Putra of Athens Bulldog claimed the top seed in 2:16.08. On her heels in 2:16.32 was this meet’s 100m fly champion, Felicia Lee of North Baltimore. National teamer Elizabeth Beisel of Bluefish captured the third seed in 2:16.86. Also advancing were World Championship teammates Katie Hoff (2:17.94) and Mary DeScenza (2:18.18) as the fourth and fifth seeds.

Club Wolverine’s Chris DeJong was the top qualifier in the men’s event in 2:05.82. Less than a second back, Keith Beavers of Region Of Waterloo took the number two seed in 2:06.44. The third seed went to U.S. Pan Ams Team member, Matt Patton, who touched in 2:07.94.

Already a winner in the women’s 50m freestyle in this meet, Team Puerto Rico’s Vanessa Garcia took the top seed in today’s prelims of the 100m freestyle, out-touching Club Wolverine’s Allison Schmitt by one-one hundredth. Northwestern University’s Andrea Hupman (57.72) and Emily Wong (57.79) captured the third and fourth seeds respectively.

Olympic gold-medalist Peter Vanderkaay of Club Wolverine leads the field going into tomorrow’s 100m freestyle final, after posting a prelims time of 51.95. In the number two spot is Ohio State product Joseph Doyle who finished in 52.36, and Club Wolverine’s Bobby Savulich took the third seed in 52.46. World University Games Team member Bryan Lundquist also advanced to the top final as the fifth seed with a time of 52.58.

In the 200m breaststroke, Olympian from North Baltimore Katie Hoff took the top seed, with a time of 2:35.85. Jessica Ward of Pickering Swim Club was the number two seed in 2:36.25, while Ashley Wanland of Toronto Swim Club was third in 2:36.86.

The top seed in the men’s event went to Athens Bulldog’s Neil Versfeld, who finished in 2:17.93, more than six seconds ahead of the field. In second, was Wales Swimming’s Rob Holderness (2:24.16), followed by Clark Burckle (2:24.56), swimming unattached.

World Championship silver-medalist Kim Vandenberg of UCLA Swimming established a new pool record in the 200m fly with a time of 2:13.08. The time bested a six-year-old mark set by Mary DeScenza. Jemma Lowe of Wales Swimming posted a time of 2:13.40 to take the second seed and Olympic gold-medalist Kaitlin Sandeno rounds out the top three with a prelims time of 2:15.66.

Up-and-coming star Daniel Madwed gave Michigan fans a preview of what is to come when the new recruit took the top seed in the men’s 200m fly with a time of 2:03.63. Behind him by just over a second, Club Wolverine’s Davis Tarwater captured the second seed in 2:04.65, followed by teammate Matt Patton (2:06.22).
