Phelps Wins Double Gold on Second Full Day of 2007 Toyota Santa Clara Grand Prix

Fifth Stop of Toyota Grand Prix Series to Conclude Sunday

World record-holder Michael Phelps was dominant on the second full day of competition at the 2007 Toyota International Invitational Grand Prix in Santa Clara, setting a new meet record in the 400m free and tying the meet record in the 200m back. He now has three gold medals after competing in three events this meet.

Phelps took home his first gold of the night and broke a meet record with a win in the men's 400m free, besting the field by more than three seconds in 3:47.34. Longhorn Aquatics' Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) was second in 3:50.83, while Canada's Ryan Cochrane was third in 3:50.89.

Australian world record-holder Leisel Jones had another strong night, winning a close race in the women's 100m breast against Olympic silver medalist Tara Kirk (Bremerton, Wash.). Jones edged Kirk at the wall by just three tenths and won gold in 1:07.09. Kirk finished in 1:07.35 and Australia's Sara Katsoulis finished third in 1:09.70.

Phelps' second gold of the night came with a win in the men's 200m back. Phelps overtook the field with a strong split in the second leg of the race and finished in 1:56.95, tying Olympic gold medalist Aaron Peirsol's meet record from 2004. Longhorn Aquatics took home the silver and bronze as David Cromwell finished second in 2:01.08 and Nick Thoman finished third in 2:01.88.

U.S. Pan American Games Teamers Julia Smit (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), Caitlin Leverenz (Tucson, Ariz.), and Jessica Rodriquez (Chuluota, Fla.) finished one, two and three respectively in the women's 400 I.M. Smith took the lead during the back leg and finished with a time of 4:40.33. Leverenz finished second in 4:43.06 and Rodriquez was close behind to finish third in 4:44.58.

Newly-minted World Champion Ben Wildman-Tobriner was barely edged out in the 50m free by Australian Olympian Eamon Sullivan. Sullivan won gold in 22.30 with Wildman-Tobriner claiming silver in 22.35. Canadian Olympian Brent Hayden finished third with a time of 22.73.

In the men's 100m fly, South Africa's Lyndon Ferns kept his lead coming off the wall to finish first and out-touch Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) by just three tenths, with a time of 53.71. Grevers touched second at 54.01 and Kenya's Jason Dunford touched third at 54.05.

In other meet action, Japan's Shiho Sakai won gold in the women's 100m backstroke, which was swum without reigning world record-holder Natalie Coughlin. Sakai won a close race in 1:01.81, while Emily Seebohm finished second in 1:01.87. Australia's Meagen Nay finished third in 1:02.18. The women's 200m free saw a close battle between Australia's Kelly Stubbins and Club Wolverines Allison Schmitt (Canton, Mich.). Stubbins was first to the wall in 2:00.33 while Schmitt finished in 2:00.36. Australia's Shayne Reese was third in 2:01.14.

The meet concludes Sunday with 12 events. The women's competition will include prelims and finals in the 200m fly, 50m free, 200m individual medley and 200m backstroke. The finals session will also feature the 800m freestyle and 400m medley relay. The men's program features prelims and finals in the 200m breaststroke, 100, freestyle, 200m I.M. and 100m backstroke. Finals will be swum in the 1500m free and 400m medley relay. Prelims begin at 9 a.m., with finals starting at 5 p.m.
