21 U.S. Olympic Swimmers to Compete in U.S. Open

The West Lafyette Pool Will See A Lot of Fast Swimming

Twenty-one U.S. Olympians will compete among the nearly 1,000 swimmers at the U.S. Open in West Lafayette, Ind., beginning Thursday, Nov. 30. Highlighting the line-up are world record-holders Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md. / Club Wolverine), Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif. / Longhorn), Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine / Longhorn) and Cullen Jones (New Brunswick, N.J. / NC State). In addition, four-time Olympic gold medalist Lenny Krayzelburg (Odessa, Russia / Trojan) will swim in his first major competition since the 2004 Olympic Games.

On the female side, a rich field boasts 10 U.S. Olympians including American record-holders Katie Hoff (Towson, Md. / North Baltimore), Amanda Weir (Lawrenceville, Ga. / Swim Atlanta) and Kaitlin Sandeno (Lake Forest, Calif. / Club Wolverine).

The U.S. Open will begin on Thursday, Nov. 30, with prelims starting at 9:30 a.m. Finals will be contested each evening beginning at 6 p.m. Highlights of the three-day schedule include the women’s 200m IM on Thursday which will see a field of swimmers led by Hoff, the American record-holder in the event. Following the women’s race, Phelps and Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla. / Daytona Beach Swimming) will square off in the men’s 200m IM.

On Friday, world record-holder Peirsol will face Olympic champion Krayzelburg in the 200m backstroke for the first time since the 2004 Olympics. Following that race is the men’s 200m freestyle, featuring American record-holder Phelps. Friday also includes a match-up in the women’s 400m IM between the American record-holder Sandeno and the U.S. Open record-holder, Hoff.

On the final day of competition, Olympic silver medalists Weir and Maritza Correia (Athens, Ga. / Athens Bulldog) will compete in the 100m freestyle. A heavily-decorated field including Phelps, Jones, Klete Keller (Phoenix, Ariz. / Club Wolverine), Lochte and Crocker will race in the men’s event.
