From Deborah Douglas

Applications Close 13 June 2008

An outstanding opportunity has arisen for a high caliber PhD student to become immersed in the high performance programs of swimming and triathlon with the New Zealand Academy of Sport North Island (NZASNI). NZASNI works in partnership with sports identified by Sport & Recreation NZ (SPARC) to enable their high performance programs, athletes and coaches to achieve international success by providing world leading support.

Based in Auckland, New Zealand, this full time scholarship will focus on adding value and becoming a key practitioner to the aquatics biomechanics programs of Swimming New Zealand and Triathlon New Zealand with the potential to develop into becoming New Zealand's key support in underwater analysis. The Aquatics Biomechanist will work closely with elite athletes and their coaches and will provide support to our Performance Analysis Unit.

The successful recipient will require excellent communication skills, be well organized and have a high level of academic achievement, with a post graduate masters in biomechanics an advantage. He/she must be able to demonstrate quality of research and a likely ability to make a positive impact on the aquatics biomechanics program of NZASNI.

The NZASNI has partnered with AUT University in Auckland NZ (Prof. Will Hopkins) and a leading European swimming expert (Prof. Rein Haljand) who specializes in underwater analysis, to provide two internationally recognized supervisors for this scholarship. Resources have been allocated to ensure the scholarship is well supported to fast track development.

We are offering the scholarship to any citizenship. The scholarship includes a NZ$35,000 tax free stipend, PhD fees waived, NZ student insurance covered, plus domestic travel and research related costs. Conditions of acceptance include the applicant not holding another scholarship concurrently and having good English written and oral skills. This scholarship must be taken up in the year awarded.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a high caliber, passionate candidate to complete their PhD while assisting elite athletes and coaches in New Zealand to achieve international success. To apply for the position, please provide a CV and covering letter to the address below, including emphasis on academic ability and interest in aquatics and biomechanics, full academic transcripts for study undertaken, and details of two referees who may be contacted for reports.
