Olympian Dara Torres Sets Two World Masters Records

Nine-time Olympic Swimming Medalist

From , former About.com Guide

39 year-old Olympian Dara Torres recently set two World Masters swimming records during the Fort Lauderdale Annual Masters Challenge Swim Meet. Both records are the fastest ever swum by any female masters swimmer. Torres' time, 22.34 in the 50-yard Free, broke the old record of 23.53 from 1996 held by Sandy Neilson-Bell. The time was also quicker than Torres swam in college (22.38, circa 1988).

Her other world record, a 49.72, came in the 100-yard Free. That time broke the old record of 51.54, also formerly held by Sandy Neilson-Bell.

Nine-time Olympic medalist Dara Torres was the first USA Swimmer to compete in four different Olympics - 1984, 1988, 1992, and 2000, , 1992, 1988, 1984. Her Olympic medals breakdown as four gold, one silver and four bronze.

Her meet results show that she has the speed to qualify for the 2008 US Olympic Trials. Will Torres, a nine-time Olympic swimming medalist (from four different Olympics!) try to make it to number five? I hope so - good luck, Dara!
