Vanderkaay, who is coming off altitude training at the USOC Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., had a strong lead throughout the race to get the win. He was followed by Josef Kinderwater (Lancaster, Pa.), who finished second in 15:38.11. Third place went to Martin Grodzki of Athens Bulldogs, who finished in 15:50.13.
Sutton's win in the women's 800m free added five points to her USA Swimming Grand Prix Series points total. Sutton currently leads the standings of the eight-meet Series. National Teamer Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky.) was second in the race with a time of 8:35.31 and Taylor O'Brien of the Parkland Aquatic Club was third in 8:47.39.
The Grand Prix Series serves as an opportunity for swimmers to race against some of the best competition in the country, as they continue their preparation for the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships (3-7 Aug) and the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships (18-22 Aug), both of which will take place in Irvine, Calif. Remaining stops in the Grand Prix series include Santa Clara (17-20 Jun) and Los Angeles (8-11 Jul).
