Jessica Hardy Breaks World Record at 2009 FINA World Cup Swim Meet in Berlin

US swimmers had a strong night in the water Sunday at the 2009 FINA World Cup Swim Meet in Berlin. Jessica Hardy broke her own world record and won gold in the women's 50m breast while Michael Phelps, Peter Marshall, Lauren Driscoll and Whitney Myers all claimed silver medals on the second and final night of the swim meet in Germany.

Sabir Muhammad (Atlanta, Ga.) also had a record-breaking performance in Berlin. The National Teamer competed in the 50m free and broke the American record in the morning prelims with a time of 21.07. He made it back for the final this evening and finished eighth with a time of 21.08.

Hardy broke her own world record with a time of 28.80 to take home the gold in the women's 50m breast. "It was fun," Hardy said after her race. "I'm just really happy to go that fast and am surprised at my swim. The audience is really loud here and I'm having a great time."

Phelps earned the silver in the men's 200m IM. He was fourth after the first 150-meters, but finished in 1:53.70 behind South Africa's Darian Townsend, who broke the world record with a time of 1:51.55. Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind.) also joined Phelps in the 200m IM final. He finished seventh with a time of 1:55.88.

Driscoll and Amber McDermott (Mill Creek, Wash.) both competed in the women's 400m free. Driscoll picked up her first World Cup silver medal with a time of 4:02.62. McDermott finished fourth in 4:03.42.

Marshall placed second in the men's 50m back. The world record holder finished just one one-hundreth behind the winner with a time of 22.86. Myers won her silver medal in the 100m IM. She placed second with a time of 58.86. She also competed in the final of the women's 100m back, finishing eighth in 58.48.

Julie Stupp (St. Louis, Mo.) and Lara Jackson (El Paso, Texas) also picked up some hardware in Berlin, earning bronze medals in the women's 400m IM and 50m fly, respectively. Stupp swam the IM in 4:31.34, while Jackson swam a 25.17 in the fly. Stupp also competed in the women's 200m breast and finished eighth in 2:26.95.

In other races, Melissa Franklin (Centennial, Colo.) finished seventh with a time of 53.41 in the women's 100m free. In the men's 1500m free, William Freeman (Atlanta, Ga.) finished sixth in 14:48.26 while Arthur Frayler (Ambler, Pa.) placed ninth in 15:04.48. Jasmine Tosky (Palo Alto, Calif.) placed sixth in women's 200m fly with a time of 2:08.80.

The conclusion of the FINA World Cup event in Berlin, Germany ends the FINA Word Cup trip made to both Stockholm and Berlin by the US Youth World Cup Team. The team, including Michael Phelps, who was the National Team representative for the team, will travel back to the United States Monday. Other U.S. swimmers competing on the FINA World Cup Swim Meet circuit will travel to Singapore for the final stop of the 2009 World Cup, November 21 and 22.
