Soni, Pelton Set Meet Records at 2010 Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix Swim Meet

Two meet records were broken Saturday night at the 2010 Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix swim meet. Rebecca Soni and Elizabeth Pelton set meet records in the 200m breast and 100m back, respectively, while Nick Thoman had an exciting win in the men's 100m back. The meet, taking place at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C., concludes Sunday, May 16.

Soni's meet record in 200m breast came in a time of 2:22.21. Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich.) was second in 2:28.77 and Corrie Clark (Malvern, Pa.) was third in 2:33.10. In the women's 100m back, 2009 World Championship team member Pelton set her meet record with a time of 1:00.64. Olympic gold medalist Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) finished second in 1:00.77 and France's Aleksandra Putra and National Youth Team member Missy Franklin (Aurora, Colo.) tied for third in 1:01.83.

In one of the most exciting races of the night, Thoman took home his first gold medal of the meet with a win in the 100m back. Thoman beat a field that included Olympians Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.), Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.). Phelps finished second in 53.92 while Grevers and David Plummer (Chanhassen, Minn.) tied for third with a time of 54.50. Peirsol was fifth in 54.68.

Dagny Knutson (Minot, N.D.) won the women's 200m fly with a time of 2:10.97. She had a strong swim and won with a margin of over three seconds. Elizabeth Beisel (Saunderstown, R.I.) was second in 2:14.28 and Felicia Lee (Wayne, N.J.) was third in 2:14.36.

Chloe Sutton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won the women's 400m free in 4:08.29. Knuston placed second in 4:09.61 and Lauren Driscoll of Ft. Lauderdale Aquatics was third in 4:11.17. On the men's side, Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich.) won the 400m free in 3:48.94. Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) was second in 3:55.50 and Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) finished third in 3:55.69.

The women's 50m free was won by Puerto Rico's Vanessa Garcia. Garcia won the race in 25.38 and was followed by Anne Marie Botek (Elicot City, Md.) was a close second in 25.54 and 2004 Olympian Amanda Weir (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished third with a time of 25.59. The title in the men's 50m free went to Josh Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio) who finished in 22.38. Schneider just edged out Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones (New Brunswick, N.J.) by two one-hundredths of a second. Jones finished in 22.40 while Trinidad and Tobago's George Bovell was third in 22.61.

In other races, Eric Shanteau (Lilburn, Ga.) won the men's 200m breast in 2:10.59. Club Seminole's Robert Holderness was second in 2:16.03 and Mark Gangloff (Akron, Ohio) was third in 2:16.73. In the men's 200m fly, China's Wu Peng won the with a time of 1:56.92. Club Wolverine teammate Dan Madwed (Towson, Md.) placed second in 1:59.87 and Todd Patrick (Baltimore, Md.) finished third in 2:01.37.

The Grand Prix Series serves as an opportunity for swimmers to race against some of the best competition in the country, as they continue their preparation for the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships (3-7 Aug) and the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships (18-22 Aug), both of which will take place in Irvine, Calif. Remaining stops in the Grand Prix series include Santa Clara (17-20 Jun) and Los Angeles (8-11 Jul).
