Olympian Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) nearly erased her own world record in the 100 backstroke when she swam just .05 seconds off of the mark with a time of 59.27 on the final day of the Janet Evans Invitational at the McDonald's Swim Stadium at the University of Sothern California.

"I screwed up on my finish," Coughlin said. "I misjudged the wall. It just happens sometimes. At this stage in the game, you don't want to make mistakes. The bright side is it was a fast swim and I still have a lot to improve on."

Coughlin's teammates Lauren Rogers (Concord, Calif.) and Sherry Tsai (Hong Kong) touched in next in the sprint backstroke race in times of 1:02.45 and 1:03.72, respectively.

Two-time Olympian Jason Lezak (Irvine, Calif.) lowered the meet record in the men's 100 freestyle with a time of 48.84. Cal Aquatics' Dominik Meichtry of Switzerland and Canada's Brent Hayden completed the medal stand in the men's 100. Meichtry swam the event in 49.03 and Hayden swam it in 49.09.

"I was happy with this race," Lezak said. "I have been under 49 seconds twice now, so I feel good. I knew there were some fast guys in the heat, but I was just focused on my race. I am looking forward to competing at Trials."
