The first day of the meet saw Kate Ziegler swim a 8:30.29 in the 800 Freestyle to claim the top preliminary spot, with Kylie Palmer in second (8:32.63) and Alyssa Anderson third (8:37.22). In the men's 1500 Freestyle prelims, Erik Vendt had the top time, 14:54.89. Michael Klueh qualified for second for finals with a 15:18.75 and Tyler Clary took the third spot with a 15:35.01. Finals for both events are on Sunday 18 May.

Fans can view all the action from the 41st Toyota Santa Clara Grand Prix online at Swimnetwork.com through the weekend. The Web site will make races and interviews available for viewing on-demand following each day's action. The meet runs May 15-18 and features Olympians Natalie Coughlin, Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Kaitlin Sandeno, Erik Vendt, Kara Lynn Joyce, Amanda Beard, Jason Lezak, Peter Vanderkaay and Margaret Hoelzer.

Swimmers competing in the meet will look to add to their Toyota Grand Prix Series point total with strong finishes in Santa Clara. The top medal-winner at the end of the Toyota Grand Prix Series will be awarded $20,000, courtesy of Toyota and USA Swimming. Phelps enters the meet as the overall medal count leader with a total of twelve gold and three bronze medals for 69 points. Mary Descenza was tied for second with Katie Hoff with a total of 51 points.
