Vendt swam a personal best time and led throughout the 1500m race on his way to the U.S. Open record, finishing more than 15 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) was second in 15:05.85 and Matt Patton (Charlotte, N.C.) was third in 15.21.69.
Phelps took home three gold medals tonight winning the men's 100m free, 200m I.M., and 100m back. Phelps beat world-record holder Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) in the 100m back, winning gold with a meet-record time of 54.03. Peirsol won the silver in 54.36 and Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) was third in 54.41. Peirsol led following the first 50 meters, however, Phelps strong finish in the final five meters edged out his competitor.
In the men's 100m free, Phelps finished just ahead of South Africa's Lyndon Ferns to win the gold. Phelps finished first in 49.15, Ferns was second in 49.33 and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich.) was third in 49.59.
In the men's 200m I.M., Phelps won the event with a time of 1:58.13, Australia's Leith Brodie was second in 2:00.87 and Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich.) was third in 2:03.32.
Australia's teen sensation Cate Campbell added to her gold medal haul with a win in the women's 50m free. Campbell edged out Kara Lynn Joyce (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) to finish in a meet-record time of 24.13, tying the fourth fastest women's 50m free time in history. Joyce won silver in 24.83 and Coughlin win the bronze in 24.92.
In other competition, Australia's Kylie Palmer won gold in the women's 800m free with a time of 8:27.05. Kate Ziegler (Great Falls, Va.) took home the silver in 8:28.31 and Kaitlin Sandeno (Lake Forest, Calif.) earned the bronze in 8:34.35.
In the women's 200m fly, DeScenza earned gold in a meet-record time of 2:07.77. Kim Vandenberg (Moraga, Calif.) was second in 2:08.19 and Ava Ohlgren (Northville, Mich.).
Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa.) also set a meet record on his way to gold in the 200m breast. Hansen finished in 2:10.62, Australia's Craig Calder was second in 2:13.03 and Japan's Ryo Tateishi was third in 2:14.22.
King Aquatic's Svetlana Karpeena took home the gold in the women's 200m I.M. with a time of 2:14.13. Ohlgren was second in 2:14.29 and Julia Smit (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) was third in 2:14.97.
Elizabeth Beisel (Saunderstown, R.I.) won the women's 200m back and set a meet record with a time of 2:11.01. DeScenza was second in 2:13.66, and the Crow Canyon Sharks' Madison White was third in 2:14.40.
The 2007-2008 Toyota Grand Prix Series will conclude with two coinciding meets June 5-8,the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational in Omaha, Neb., and the Charlotte Ultraswim in Charlotte, N.C.
