The 2008 Minnesota Grand Prix Swim Meet kicked off today at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. National Teamer and American record-holder Mary Descenza (Naperville, Ill.) earned double gold on the opening night in the 200y freestyle and 100y butterfly, while Olympian Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) took home a gold and silver medal.

Descenza battled Olympians Allison Schmitt (Canton, Mich.) and Chloe Sutton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) battled for the top spot in the women's 200y free. Descenza jumped out to the lead and held on to it for her first gold of the meet in 1:46.69. Athens Bulldog teammate Schmitt stopped the clock at 1:47.31 for silver, while Sutton was overtaken by Gopher Yuen Kobayashi in a time of 1:49.21 for the bronze. Sutton was fourth in 1:49.67.

Descenza returned one event later to take the women's 100y butterfly title 53.52. Lauren Harrington (Memphis, Tenn.) got her hand on the wall second in a time of 54.86 and Kaylee Jamison (St Charles, Ill.) was third in 55.71.

Olympian and world record-holder Lochte swam to an easy win in the men's 200y IM with a time of 1:45.59. Ian Clark touched in more than three seconds later at 1:49.19 for second, and Brian Kiel (Rochester, Minn.) finished third in 1:50.12.

Lochte led the men's 100y breaststroke until the final turn when Matthew Lowe (Minot, N.D.) surged ahead. Lowe touched in at 54.15 followed by Lochte with a time of 55.04. University of Minnesota's Colin Lee-To (Excelsior, Minn.) completed the medal stand with a time of 55.09.

Sutton, who competed in the open water 10K event at the Olympics, picked up her first gold medal of the meet with a time of 9:39.26 in the 1000y free. Fellow open water veteran Kirsten Groome (Shreveport, La.) swam to a silver medal in 9:43.09. University of Minnesota swimmer Ashley Steenvoorden (East Brunswick, N.J.) rounded out the top three in 9:46.74.

Eegan Groome (Shreveport, La.), whose sister Kirsten earned a silver medal just one event earlier, touched in first in the men's 1000y free in a time of 9:15.98. National Teamer Deni Cullom (Portland, Maine) swam the second-fastest time of 9:18.35, while Mission Viejo teammate Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif.) earned the bronze in 9:19.92.

Gopher Jillian Tyler (Calgary, Alberta) took home gold in front of a home crowd in the 100y breast in a time of 1:01.17. Corrie Clark (Malvern, Pa.) touched in second with a time of 1:02.16 and Leah Pierce (Columbia, Mo.) was third with 1:02.74. Clark completed the women's individual events of the evening with a bronze-medal time of 2:03.94 in the 200y IM.

Other winners for the night included William Copeland (Lexington, Ky.) in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:36.81 and Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis.) won the men's 100y fly in 45.73. Katie Kastes swam the winning time of 1:59.85 in the women's 200y IM.

The meet will continue tomorrow with prelims beginning at 9 a.m., and finals beginning at 6 p.m. The men's and women's 400y IM, 50y free, 200y breast, 100y backstroke and 500y free will be swum. You can view real-time results on-line.
