Hoff Claims Double Gold on First Night of 2008 Toyota Grand Prix in Ohio
2004 Olympian Katie Hoff won two events, leading a field of Olympians on the opening night of the Toyota Grand Prix at the Ohio State University on 4 April 2008. Olympic medalists Brendan Hansen, Michael Phelps, Peter Vanderkaay, and Kaitlin Sandeno were also winners as action got underway in Columbus. The meet continues tomorrow with prelims and finals in the 400m IM, 50m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 100m backstroke and 400m freestyle. The 400m medley relay will be swum with finals.

Erik Vendt Sets US Open Swimming Record on the Final Day at the 2008 Mo GP Meet
Two-time Olympian Erik Vendt broke the U.S Open record in the mens 1500m free Monday, on the final day of competition at The 2008 Missouri Grand Prix. Vendt swam under American-record pace for the majority of the 1500m race, however, he faded slightly in the last 200 meters, to finish in 14:47.59. Mission Viejo teammates Chad La Tourette and Fran Crippen hit the wall next in 15:03.59 and 15:20.74, respectively.

Twenty Olympians, including eight-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps and four-time Olympian Dara Torres, are expected to compete at the 2008 Missouri Grand Prix, February 15-18 at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Mo. The third stop in the 2007-2008 Toyota Grand Prix Series marks the first long course competition of 2008 for many of the top swimmers in the United States. The Missouri Grand Prix has traditionally been a highly-competitive meet and last year saw a world record fall.

Katie Hoff broke her second American record of the meet with her standout swim in the women's 200m free during Sunday morning finals of the 2008 Missouri Grand Prix. Hoff's gold-medal winning time of 1:56.08 lowered the previous 200m free American record set by Natalie Coughlin at World Championships in 2007. Coughlin was second with a time of 1:57.47. Kara Lynn Joyce was third with a time of 1:58.72. Hoff, Coughlin and Joyce all wore the new Speedo LZR RACER swimsuit during their swim.

National Teamer Mary Descenza topped the 2007-08 Toyota Grand Prix Series leaderboard this weekend, having accumulated 41 points from the Minnesota and Southern California Grand Prix meets. After the Minnesota stop, Descenza trailed Olympian Ryan Lochte in second place with 19 points. However, the two-time national champion picked up an additional two gold and four silver medals to bring her 22 points closer to the grand prize of $20,000 to be awarded at the Omaha Grand Prix, June 5-8.

Joyce set a meet record with her swim in the 50y free and also took the top spot in the 200y free. Grevers won gold in the men's 50y and 200y free, setting meet records in each event. Fifty-eight of the nation's top swimmers will head to Chiba, Japan to compete in the 2007 Japan International Grand Prix, Aug. 21-24. The team features 2007 World Championship silver medalist Kim Vandenberg, 2007 Pan American Games gold medalist Randall Bal, 2004 Olympian Rachel Komisarz, and 2007 National Champion Rebecca Soni. Two sets of siblings will also compete in Japan, including Tara and Dana Kirk, and Melanie and Jonathan Roberts.
