Olympians Dominate Medal Stand on Final Night of 2008 Ohio Toyota Grand Prix

Peter Vanderkaay became just the fourth American to go under 15 minutes in the 1500m freestyle and won his second gold medal of the Toyota Grand Prix at the Ohio State University as meet action concluded tonight. Vanderkaay improved his own best time by 28 seconds and bested the field by more than 53 seconds with a time of 14:52.56.

Katie Hoff (Towson, Md.) finished her dominant performance with a meet-high fourth gold medal in the 100m freestyle. Hoff bested the field by more than seven-tenths with her time of 55.24. In second was Northwestern’s Andrea Hupman (55.96) while Ariann Vanderpool-Wallace was third in 56.19. Hoff also won silver in the 200m fly, bringing her meet total to four golds and one silver.

Earning his second gold medal of the meet, two-time Olympian Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) swam to a 2.59-second win in the 200m backstroke (1:56.41). University of Florida’s Roland Rudolf was second in 1:59.00 while third-place went to Longhorn’s David Cromwell (2:01.25).

Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) finished second in the 100m freestyle, posting the third-fastest swim by an American in 48.41. The medal brought Phelps’ meet total to four – two gold and two silver. The gold medal in the race went to Brazilian Olympian Caesar Cielo, who put up a time of 48.34, while bronze went to Auburn’s Fred Bousquet in 49.38.

Kaitlin Sandeno (Lake Forest, Calif.) won the 200m fly with a time 2:10.75. It was her second gold and third medal of the meet. Sandeno finished .28 seconds ahead of silver medalist Hoff (2:11.03) while North Baltimore’s Courtney Kalisz (Bel Air, Md.) finished third with a time of 2:11.27.

In other meet action, Germantown Aquatics’ Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) won the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:12.88. North Baltimore’s Elizabeth Pelton was second in 2:12.95 and Crippen’s teammate Katie Riefenstahl was third in 2:15.32. The men’s 200m fly went to Brazil’s Kaio Almeida in 1:57.40 followed by North Baltimore’s Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn.) in 1:58.17. Team Mexico swimmer Israel Duran Mata took third in 2:00.86.

In relay action, North Baltimore’s women completed their sweep of the three relay events with a win in the 400m free relay (3:47.60). Host Ohio State took second in 3:57.03 while Nashville Aquatics was third in 3:59.28. Ohio State won the men’s event with a time of 3:23.71 while Bolles School was second (3:26.93) and Mecklenburg Aquatics took third in 3:30.01.
