Michel Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) won his third gold medal of the meet and clinched the Toyota Grand Prix Series crown on the second night of action at the 2008 Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational in Omaha, Neb. tonight. Olympians Erik Vendt (North Easton, Mass.), Peter Vanderkaay (Richmond, Mich.), Margaret Hoelzer (Huntsville, Ala.) and Megan Jendrick (Puyallup, Wash.) also earned gold. The meet, which is serving as a test-run of the temporary pool built inside the Qwest Center Omaha for the 2008 Olympic Team Trials - Swimming, concludes tomorrow with prelims and finals in the 200m fly, 50m free, 200m IM and 200m backstroke and timed finals in the men's 1500m free and women's 800m free.

Phelps pulled out ahead of the field in the 100m backstroke, turning in 26.20 before finishing with the eighth-best time in history (53.42) to claim gold. The win brought his point total on the eight-meet Toyota Grand Prix to 112, earning the Olympian a $20,000 purse, courtesy of Toyota and USA Swimming. The women's race went to 2004 Olympian Hoelzer, who led by three-tenths at the turn before building nearly a half-second margin for the gold medal (1:00.38).

In the men's 400m IM, freestyle distance star and two-time Olympian Vendt broke from his normal program to blow away the field, winning by more than six seconds (4:14.99). The women's race went to 17-year-old Olympic hopeful Caitlin Leverenz (Tucson, Ariz.) who shaved nearly two seconds of her personal best time to finish 6.76 seconds ahead of her competitors in 4:38.81.

The 200m freestyle went to Club Wolverine swimmer and 2004 Olympian Vanderkaay who cruised to the win in 1:46.45. Vanderkaay led at the first wall and never looked back, taking the win by more than two seconds. In the women's event, Club Wolverine teammate Allison Schmitt (Canton, Mich.) celebrated her 18th birthday with a gold medal performance (1:57.48). The time was a personal best for Schmitt.

In the 100m breaststroke, 2000 Olympic champion Jendrick took the gold with a time of 1:07.41. The men's event was won by Henrick Barbosa of Brazil whose time of 1:01.40 bested U.S. national teamer Eric Shanteau (Lilburn, Ga.), second in 1:02.13.
