In the mens race, Peterson, of Carteret Currents proved to his competitors why he is considered one of the worlds foremost open water specialists. Warkentin, Rose win 25K US Open Water Swimming 2007 National Championships
The 2007 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships wrapped up today in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., with the men’s and women’s 25K. Winning the men’s race was Mark Warkentin of the Santa Barbara Swim Club, with a time of 5 hours, 20 minutes and 47 seconds. Erica Rose, unattached, came out on top of the women’s race with a time of 6:12:51.

Winning the men’s race was Mark Warkentin of the Santa Barbara Swim Club, with a time of 5 hours, 20 minutes and 47 seconds. Erica Rose, unattached, came out on top of the women’s race with a time of 6:12:51.

Robert Margalis won his third event at the 2007 USA Swimming Spring Championships, taking the 400m free with a time of 3:52.78. Margalis, a swimmer on the 2007 U.S. Pan American Games team, also won the 200m butterfly on Wednesday and the 400m IM on Thursday. In Friday night’s race, he took it out like a shot and was able to hold off a charging Fran Crippen of Mission Viejo in the final 50 meters. Crippen was second in 3:54.19, while Chad LaTourette, also of Mission Viejo, was third in 3:54.84.

Heats begin at 9 a.m. each morning with finals starting at 5:30 p.m. The meet, which is officially sanctioned by USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport, will feature talent including Olympic medalists, national champions and Long Island’s top local talent. Highlighting the field are an array of Olympic medalists.
