Knutson, who swam in only one event Thursday, won the 500y free against a field that included American record-holder Katie Hoff. Her time of 4:31.18 was just less than a second behind the American record. Hoff (Towson, Md.) finished second with a time of 4:37.33 and Hungary's Katinka Hosszu was third in 4:40.87.
In the men's 500y free, Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich.) won the gold with a time of 4:12.60. France's Clement Lefert was second in 4:19.39 and Hungary's Zoltan Povazsay was third in 4:21.55.
In the quickest race of the night, Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.) won the 50m free in 19.08. The Washington native led at the first and only turn to out touch his 2008 Olympic teammate Cullen Jones (New Brunswick, N.J.). Jones finished in 19.46 and William Copeland (Lexington, Va.) was third in 19.47. On the women's side, 2004 Olympian Amanda Weir (Lawrenceville, Ga.) took home the title in the women's 50y free. Weir earned the gold medal with a time of 21.90. Jessica Hardy (Long Beach, Calif.) finished just .14 behind Weir with a time of 22.04. Kara Lynn Joyce (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was third in 22.29.
Ariana Kukors (Auburn, Wash.) won the women's 200y IM in 1:55.40. Hosszu was second in 1:56.11 and Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich.) was third in 1:56.19. World Championship gold medalist Eric Shanteau (Lilburn. Ga.) won the men's 200y IM in 1:44.05, while Brazil's Andre Schultz was second in 1:45.67 and Rex Tullius (Port Orange, Fla.) was third in 1:46.10
Both the Cal men's and women's teams swept the relay events Thursday night. The men's and women's team won both the 200y free relay and the 400y medley relay. The women finished the 200y medley relay in 1:33.49 while the men set a championship record with a time of 1:18.13. The women won the gold in the 400y medley relay in 3:37.09 and the men won gold in 3:11.00
