Notes from Tuesday's preliminaries:
Women's 100m back:
Both U.S. swimmers competing in the women’s 100m back won their heats to advance to Wednesday's semifinals. Julia Smit (Palo Alto, Calif.) swam a 1:02.33 to win heat two, and Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the first heat at 1:02.46. The pair will enter the semifinal as the top two seeds in the event.Men's 400m free:
Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.) turned in the best time in the preliminary swim of the 400m free, swimming the race in 3:51.32 to head into Wednesday's final as the top seed. Matt Patton's (Charlotte, N.C.) time of 3:53.30 also earned him a spot in the finals.Women's 100m breast:
Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.) briefly held the Pan American Games record following her swim in the 100m breast. She qualified in 1:08.94 to win the first heat and set the record until Canada's Annamay Pierse qualified in 1:07.78 one heat later. Team USA's Michelle McKeehan (Franklin, Ind.) also advanced to the semifinal, finishing third in 1:10.35.Competition will continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. local time and will feature finals in the men’s 400m free, 100m fly, 100m free, and 100m breast, and the women’s 50m free, 100m fly, and 800m free relay. Semifinals will be swum in the men’s 200m back, women’s 100m breast and 100m back.
