Sports fans love talking about how their favorite teams and players will perform. But, these educated and emotional guesses are easy compared to predicting who will qualify for the Olympics in the world's most pressure-packed race in open water swimming history: the 2008 World Open Water Swimming Championships. The top 15 (or 16) finishers at the 2008 World Championships will qualify for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in Seville to be held May 3rd (women) and May 4th (men)

The 2008 Open Water World Championships are in Seville, Spain 3-8 May. Thirty-nine countries are represented by 55 men and 55 women swimmers. The swimmers will race in 5km, 10km, and 25km events. The top 10 men and women swimmers in the 10km races will qualify for the 2008 Olympic 10km open water event.
Lochte Sets World Record, Team USA Wins Trophy at FINA 2008 Short Course Worlds
Team USA and Ryan Lochte ended the 2008 FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships on a high note Sunday, taking home the Championship trophy for their overall performance in the meet and adding a new world mark to the record books in the case of Lochte's gold medal performance in the 100m I.M. Team USA swimmers also broke four American records Sunday and ended the meet atop the gold medal count, earning a total of 10 gold medals and 17 medals overall.
2008 FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships
Ryan Lochte proved his dominance in the pool once again Saturday by breaking the world record in the men's 100m I.M. at the 9th FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships in Manchester, England. Lochte bested the previous record by more than four tenths with a time of 51.25. Team USA's Jessica Hardy and Peter Marshall took home individual gold medals, bringing the U.S. overall medal count to 11 (eight gold, two silver and one bronze).

Jessica Hardy set one for the record books Thursday, breaking the world record in the 50m breast at the 2008 FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships in Manchester, England. Hardy broke her first short course world record with a winning time of 29.58. Hardy is now the current 50m breast world champion in both short course and long course meters.

Team USA had a strong first day of competition at the 9th FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships, winning gold and breaking the world record in the men's 400m free relay. The team of Ryan Lochte, Bryan Lundquist, Nathan Adrian, and Doug Van Wie set the world record with a time of 3:08.44, besting the previous record by more than a second. Mary Descenza took home Team USA's first individual gold of the meet and set an American record in the 200m fly with a time of 2:04.27.

Like Micha Burden, the women's 10K winner yesterday, Mark settled himself comfortably behind his competitors throughout the majority of the race, using positioning to his optimal advantage.

The nation's top open water swimmers will continue their bid for Olympic selection in the final domestic qualifying event of the quad, the USA Swimming Open Water World Championship Trials. The Trials will be held Oct. 20-21, 2007, at Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club in Fort Myers, Fla. The 2006 FINA World Masters Championships at Stanford
The 2006 XI FINA World Masters Championships will begin Friday, August 4, 2006 with swimming and water polo and conclude Thursday, August 17, 2006 with Synchronized Swimming. Opening Ceremonies will take place on Thursday, August 3, 2005. More than 8,000 world-class adult athletes, ages 25 years and older, from over 60 countries will converge upon the San Francisco Bay Area to compete in the world’s largest competitive aquatic meet.

American Swimmers Advance From Preliminaries to Semis and to Finals on Day 2 of
The second morning of prelims at the 2007 FINA World Championships saw seven American competitors advance to semi-finals tonight and both Hayley Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) and Kate Ziegler (Great Falls, Va.) qualified for the final of the 1500m freestyle. Peirsol’s time of 16:02.82 earned her the first seed. Ziegler claimed the third seed, finishing in 16:07.71. The final of the 1500m freestyle will be contested Tuesday night.

FINA Disciplinary Hearing Suspends Coach/Father for 6-years for Hitting Swimmer/
FINA has decided to suspend the coach that hit his swimmer - the father that hit his daughter - for 6-years. Too bad they cannot also get them into domestic abuse counseling; that might be a real way to help the daughter.
2007 FINA World Championships Swimming Races Broadcast Schedule
USA Swimming is teaming with the World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) to provide television coverage on Fox Sports Net and live web coverage on WCSN.com of the action from the 12th FINA Aquatics World Championships, March 17-April 1 in Melbourne, Australia. The 2007 World Championships is considered the top international swimming competition in the world outside of the Olympic Games, and this meet will be the best indicator of the stars to watch in 2008.
