Lochte Breaks 200 Back World Record, Team USA Men's Smashes World Record
Ryan Lochte produced the upset of Friday night’s swimming finals, setting the world record in the 200m backstroke at the 2007 FINA World Swimming Championships. Lochte returned later to swim on the world record-setting 800m freestyle relay with teammates Michael Phelps, Klete Keller and Peter Vanderkaay. It’s safe to say the American swimmers have dominated this week, setting 10 swimming world records and collecting 23 medals so far.

U.S. Swim Team Perfect on Day Six Prelims at 2007 World Swimming Championships
It was a perfect record for Team USA during Friday morning’s preliminary heats at the FINA World Championships. Out of six events contested, all American competitors passed on to the next round. Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) is the top seed in the men’s 100m butterfly, and the men’s 800m freestyle relay earned the top spot for tonight’s final.

USA Swimming is reporting that world record holder Brendan Hansen has been scratched from the 200m breaststroke due to a virus. He felt ill after returning from the swimming events on Wednesday night, where he had won the silver medal in the 50m breaststroke.

Phelps Shatters Second World Record At World Champs
Michael Phelps was once again the buzz of the swimming world Wednesday, smashing his own world record in the 200m butterfly on the fourth day of swimming at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Phelps’ time tonight of 1:52.09 was more than a second-and-a-half faster than the old mark of 1:53.71 which he set just 39 days ago at the Missouri Grand Prix.

Wednesday Prelims at World Champs: Vaziri Sets American Record in 50m Backstroke
After a stunning night of swimming that saw the Americans break three world and one American record, Team USA returned to the pool Wednesday morning for preliminaries in four events. Six Americans advanced to tonight’s semifinals, which will be contested in addition to finals in the men’s 200m butterfly, women’s 200m freestyle, men’s 50m breaststroke and men’s 800m free. Leila Vaziri was the talk of the morning in the American camp, as the 21-year-old set an American record in the 50m back.

The second morning of prelims at the 2007 FINA World Championships saw seven American competitors advance to semi-finals tonight and both Hayley Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) and Kate Ziegler (Great Falls, Va.) qualified for the final of the 1500m freestyle. Peirsol’s time of 16:02.82 earned her the first seed. Ziegler claimed the third seed, finishing in 16:07.71. The final of the 1500m freestyle will be contested Tuesday night.

Kalyn Keller Wins Silver in Open Water 25k at 2007 FINA World Champs
Call it "extreme swimming," if you wish. The women's open water 25k had a little bit of everything - from intense weather, to tough competition, to a re-start a day later, and a swimmer who made a last minute decision to swim the longest of all open water races at the FINA World Championships. And that decisison paid off for Kalyn Keller (Phoenix, Ariz.) when she won Team USA's first open water medal - a silver in the women’s 25k at St. Kilda beach today.

Mark Warkentin (Santa Barbara, Calif. / Santa Barbara Swim Club) was the top American finisher in the men’s open water 10K Wednesday at the 12th FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, placing 20th in the Olympic-distance race. American teammate Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev. / Reno Aquatic Club) crossed the finish line in 33rd.
