Better Technique + More Power = Faster Swimming DVD from Vasa

Vasa

The Bottom Line

This DVD, aimed at owners of the Vasa Ergometer, has something for non-owners, too. If you do own a Vasa and you don't own this DVD, stop reading now and order the DVD, it's free. If you don't own a Vasa, but want to add a good technique DVD to your swimming library, this is one to consider. It has a lot of great swimming technique tips that don't require a Vasa to put into practice. I'd rank the DVD higher if 50% of it was not aimed at Vasa owners (but that is the point of the DVD).

Pros

  • Great breakdown of the basic parts of a strong swimmer's pull
  • Easy to see and understand the swim stroke tips
  • Uses both land and underwater views to put tips and ideas into proper perspective
  • Great workout tips and integration ideas on how to use the Vasa Ergometer

Cons

  • Main aim is for Vasa Ergometer owners
  • If you don't own a Vasa, half of the DVD is of very little use

Description

  • 60-minute DVD that offers swim stroke tips and ways to use the Vasa in everyday swim training
  • Part one is applicable to all swimmers, teaching essential swim stroke/pull focus points.
  • Part two is for owners of a Vasa Ergometer, explaining how to use the Vasa, some of the benefits, and key workouts
  • If you own a Vasa, get the DVD. If you don't own a Vasa, the DVD is still a good addition to your swimming library

Guide Review - Better Technique + More Power = Faster Swimming (DVD Review)

The DVD has two main parts. Part one covers some general swim technique principles. Part two shows how to use a Vasa Ergometer and how to integrate it into a swim training plan. I'm not going to review part two, it really is aimed at Vasa owners and its information is specific to them; it is great stuff and will get a Vasa user doing things the right way on the ergometer.

Part one, presented by Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen (multiple World Masters Swimmer of the Year, multiple masters world record holder, and swim coach) gives great tips that can be used by any swimmer to improve their swim technique, swimming efficiency, and speed. The Technique portion of the Vasa DVD looks at 5 areas of emphasis from Pipes-Neilsen:

  • Hand Placement
  • Fingertip Orientation
  • Wrist Use and the Power of the Y
  • Umph at the Front
  • Exiting the Stroke
These ideas can be used in any swimming stroke, and can be used in both pool swimming and open water swimming. Putting these tips into practice - using them when you swim at a swim practice - will help improve your swimming technique, improve your swimming ability, leading to faster and/or more efficient swimming.
