Universiade - The World University Games
Twenty-six of the USA's best swimmers will compete in the 2009 World University Games to be held in Belgrade, Serbia. Swimming will take place July 5-11, with the full Games from July 1-12, 2009.
The women's 400m free relay got Team USA off to a solid start Thursday as the foursome set a Universiade record in 3:40.85 at the 2007 Summer World University Games. In all, Team USA walked away with five medals on the first day of swim competition.
Team USA had a strong day in the pool Friday, taking home four medals on the second day of swim competition at the 2007 Summer World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. The squad collected three gold medals and one silver at the Thammasat University Aquatic Center.
The US women's 800m freestyle relay broke the World University Games record for the second time in one day and won gold during the third night of finals at the 2007 World University Games this evening. The relay squad of Kate Dwelley, Erin Reilly, Lindsay Smith and Kaitlin Sandeno, finished tonight's final in 7:57.87 to claim the sixth swimming gold medal for Team USA. The time broke the mark of 8:03.22, which was set by the American squad during this morning's prelims.
For the seventh time in four days, a U.S. relay broke a World University Games record. The U.S. mens 800m freestyle relay team shattered the 12-year-old Games mark first in prelims, and lowered the mark in tonight's finals en route to Team USAs sixth swimming gold medal. The squad of Matt McGinnis, Adam Ritter, Doug Van Wie and Michael Klueh posted a time of 7:13.72 to win the gold in tonights final.
Pat Mellors and Adam Ritter broke World University Games records and added two more U.S. gold medals on the penultimate night of swimming at the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok tonight. The U.S. swim team has now accounted for 21 medals, eight of them gold.
Chad LaTourette won his second gold medal of the meet and set a new Games record in the 1500m freestyle and Team USA added another five medals as swimming competition concluded at the World University Games in Bangkok tonight. The mens 400m medley relay won the silver medal to complete Team USAs streak of relay hardware. The six U.S. relays finished with four gold and two silver medals and broke eight Games records at this meet.
