At What Age Did You Learn to Swim? Help a Student Gather Data

Friday October 17, 2008
I'm in a math 111 class and we are working on a paper about linear functions. I want to do my paper on the age a person learned to swim and the number of different strokes they know to see if there might be a correlation. So here is my question for you: At what age did you learn to swim?

(1) RAM KARANDIKAR says:

Dear Sirs,
There is no age limit for learning swimming.
I am 77 and yet do all type strokes.
I have learnt swimming when I was very young
and in a villege in a well.
That time I never new anything about strokes.
I have learnt the strokes very recently on my
own without any instructions or guidance.

Sir,

I didn’t learn to face up to my fear of water until I was around 65. I am now 69 and I now swim laps at the YMCA almost daily and I also learned to dive on my 66th birthday. I love swimming and only wish I had started years ago. Diane

My father held me on his palm and taught me to swim (freestyle)when I was three. The next year we joined a swim club and I learned the back, breast, and butterfly. I swam a lot when I was a kid but only recently picked it back up. I swim an hour almost everyday.

I learned to swim when I was about 5 years old. I was on swim team for many, many years even all the way through college. My kids are now grown and I still am a very active swimmer. I have my own pool and teach water aqua-aerobics. Number of strokes that I swim; side-stroke, breast stroke, freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and elementary backstroke.

It was important to learn to swim when I was a kid. My friends and I all grew up together–from kindergarten to young adulthood. One of the requisites for hanging out together was athletics:tumbling, all kinds of “ball” diving and swimming, too. We were all pretty good swimmers since around 10 or 12 years of age. Today, at 60, I’ve become a competitive swimmer. For the last 4 years or so, I’ve taught myself many other strokes, including the butterfly, and have won gold medals in all of them at one time or another. I really like this sport!

I was 3 when I learned how to swim.
My mother literally threw me into a survival swim class. I didn’t learn all of the strokes until I was 12 though.

(10) peggy says:

I think I learned to swim as I learned to walk. For the sake of putting a number to it let’s say 3 yrs. Every summmer my mother would clean up the house after breakfast and pack 7 kids up for a day at the pool. We would be there in the AM for lessons, then a picnic lunch then until suppertime. Sometimes my dad joined us after work and we stayed longer. I swam competitively from “8 and unders” through high school. I picked up Masters two years ago. age now, 45.
