The American Academy of Pediatrics has released a new position statement on drowning prevention and swimming lessons for children. Their previous position was that children should wait until they are 4-years old before starting swim lessons. The new position statement (as of May 2010) is that
children as young as 1-year old can benefit from swim lessons, decreasing the odds of drowning deaths. The position statement also says that research does not show that children under 1-year old benefit from swim lessons in terms of water survival skills.
