USA Swimming Report: Four Olympic Records Fall In Thursday's Prelims

Olympic records were set in each of the preliminaries contested Thursday at the 2008 Olympic Games. Setting Olympic records were Amaury Leveaux of France in the men’s 50m free (21.46); Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain in the women’s 800m free (8:18.06); Milorad Cavic of Serbia in the men’s 100m fly (50.76) and Kirsty Coventry in the women’s 200m back (2:06.76).

Here's a look at what happened in Thursday's prelims, and races to watch in Friday morning's semifinals and finals:

Men’s 50m Free: Semifinal
Reigning world champion Ben Wildman-Tobriner qualified as the third seed for semis, turning in a time of 21.75. Olympic Trials champion and American record-holder Garrett Weber-Gale qualified as the ninth seed in 21.95 The top seed is Amaury Leveaux of France, who set the Olympic record in 21.46.

Women’s 200m Breast: FINAL
Rebecca Soni, who set the American and Olympic record (2:22.17) in Wednesday’s prelims, is the top seed for finals with a time of 2:22.63. Soni will face off against world record-holder Leisel Jones of Australia, who qualified as the second seed in 2:23.04.

Men’s 200m Back: FINAL
Aaron Peirsol and Ryan Lochte, who share the world record in the 200m back, are the top two qualifiers for tomorrow’s finals. Peirsol took the top seed in 1:55.26, while Lochte is the second seed in 1:55.40.

Women’s 200m Back: Semifinal
Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe set the Olympic record in the women’s 200m back in 2:06.76. Elizabeth Beisel is the sixth seed heading into semifinals in 2:09.02, while world record-holder Margaret Hoelzer is the seventh seed in 2:09.12.

Men’s 200m IM: FINAL
Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, the top two swimmers of all time in the 200m IM, will be the top two seeds heading into tomorrow’s finals of that event. Lochte earned the top qualifying time in 1:57.69, while Phelps, the world record-holder and reigning Olympic champion, is the second seed in 1:57.70.

Women’s 100m Free: FINAL
Natalie Coughlin is the top seed heading into finals of the women’s 100m free, turning in a time of 53.70 in Thursday’s semifinals. Teammate Lacey Nymeyer failed to qualify, finishing 12th in semifinals in 54.74. World record-holder Libby Trickett of Australia will be in the field after qualifying in the eighth position.

Men’s 100m Butterfly: Semifinal
Milorad Cavic of Serbia set the Olympic record in prelims in 50.76. Michael Phelps qualified for the semifinals as the second seed in 50.87, while world record-holder Ian Crocker qualified thirteenth in 51.95.

Women's 800 Free
The prelims of the women’s 800m free were also contested Thursday, with finals to be swum Saturday morning. Katie Hoff and Kate Ziegler both missed qualifying for the finals. Ziegler finished 10th in prelims in 8:26.98, while Hoff was 11th in 8:27.78.
